Summers & Zim's Academy

Developing the Next Generation of Good-Natured Technicians

Welcome to the Summers & Zim’s Academy: a hands-on, paid, certification-track apprentice program for the next generation of plumbers, HVAC techs, and electricians in Southeastern Pennsylvania region.

What Is Summers & Zim's Academy?

It’s our in-house trade training program, and it’s built for people who are serious about the trades.

Since 1930, Summers & Zim’s has been the name homeowners in this region trust. The Summers & Zim’s Academy exists because we believe the best way to keep that standard alive is to grow it from within. We invest in our apprentices because that investment comes back to every customer we serve.

This is where inquisitive learners become technicians, and technicians become the kind of pros that customers ask for by name.

Why We Created the Academy

Exceptional service does not happen by accident. It is earned through preparation, professionalism, craftsmanship, and a genuine commitment to serving people well.

At Summers & Zim’s, we believe every customer interaction is an opportunity to earn trust, strengthen relationships, and represent our community with excellence.

Purpose, Vision & Mission

The Academy is not about memorizing scripts or relying on sales techniques. It is about developing professionals who understand people, communicate clearly, solve problems well, and consistently earn the trust of the homeowners they serve.

Purpose

To develop exceptional HVAC, plumbing, and electrical professionals through consistent processes, continuous coaching, and a commitment to earning the homeowner’s trust on every visit.

Vision

To become the most trusted home service company in our region by developing people first, because investing in our team means a better customer experience and a rewarding career for every member.

Mission

We exist to serve homeowners with professionalism, integrity, and craftsmanship while creating an environment where our team continually grows as professionals, teammates, and leaders.

What Makes This Academy Different?

Many training programs focus primarily on technical skills or sales techniques. The Summers & Zim’s Academy focuses on developing complete professionals, because exceptional service is the natural result of strong character, consistent habits, and a commitment to continual growth.

Technical knowledge is essential. Professionalism is what brings it to life.

The Nine Commitments of a Summers & Zim's Professional

These are more than expectations. They help define what it means to be a Summers & Zim’s professional.

Always Learning

We never stop learning.

Three Paths. One Standard.

We train apprentices in three disciplines:

Plumbing · HVAC · Electrical

Every path is built around the same foundation: real skills, real mentorship, and real credentials. Apprentices work toward industry certifications and licenses, and we’ll put them through the schooling to get there.

How Training Works

This isn’t a once-a-week thing. Our apprentices train constantly, in multiple formats:

  • In the Classroom. Multiple classroom sessions per week, led by experienced Summers & Zim’s technicians covering theory, code, safety, and systems.
  • Out in the Field. You’ll ride along with senior techs on real service calls. Not watching from the corner — actually learning how a pro moves through a job, talks to a customer, and solves a problem under pressure.
  • Off-Site at Industry Schools. We send our apprentices to some of the best trade training programs in the region, including:
  • TotalTech. Hands-on HVAC, plumbing, and electrical on-site training
  • PPATEC. Oil heat and combustion systems
  • PSA/PHCC. Plumbing and HVAC industry training through the Pennsylvania chapter
  • Online Between Jobs. Learning doesn’t stop when the workday does. Our apprentices have access to leading online trade platforms including Skillcat, Electrician U, and TAIA School, so you can build knowledge on your own time, at your own pace.
  • Evenings When It Counts. Some of our most important training happens after hours. We make it work because getting it right matters more than keeping it convenient.

We Put You Through School

Certifications and licenses aren’t optional in this industry — they’re the baseline. We cover the cost and the time to get you there. When you complete the program, you walk away with credentials that follow you for the rest of your career.

The SZ Way

Principles alone are not enough — they have to be lived in the work we do every day. That is the purpose of The SZ Way: the practical application of the Summers & Zim’s Professional, turning our culture into consistent actions on every visit.

Every position in our company has its own version of The SZ Way. The responsibilities differ; the expectations do not. Below is the standard our field professionals are trained to.

Culture defines who we are. The SZ Way defines how we live it.

  • Step 1: Pre-Job Preparation

The customer experience begins before the technician reaches the driveway. Preparation means arriving informed, equipped, and ready to focus on the customer — not searching for information or materials after the visit has already begun.

    • Review the appointment details before departure.
    • Listen to the original customer call and pre-brief.
    • Review service history, open recommendations, and recurring services.
    • Confirm membership status and applicable benefits.
    • Contact the appropriate team member when additional context is needed.
    • Load likely materials, tools, and equipment.
    • Plan the route and arrive within the promised window.
  • Step 2: Proper Introduction

The introduction sets the tone for the entire visit. Customers are deciding whether they feel safe, respected, and confident before any technical work begins.

    • Park respectfully and confirm the location when needed.
    • Approach the door without unnecessary tools or materials.
    • Introduce yourself and confirm the customer and purpose of the visit.
    • Provide an appropriate credibility statement.
    • Use floor savers and protect the home before entering.
    • Explain what the customer can expect from the visit.
    • Ask permission before moving through the home or accessing additional areas.
  • Step 3: Understanding the Call

Every customer has a story worth understanding. Before diagnosing or recommending, we need to understand what the customer has experienced, what matters most to them, and what they hope the visit will accomplish.

    • Ask the customer to explain and show the reason for the visit.
    • Use open-ended questions before narrowing the conversation.
    • Clarify what changed, when it began, and how it affects the home.
    • Ask how the customer prefers to receive updates.
    • Take clear before photos and document existing conditions.
    • Evaluate thoroughly rather than focusing only on the first visible symptom.
    • Summarize your understanding before moving forward.
  • Step 4: Next Steps & Present Options

Our role is not to decide for customers. It is to help them make informed decisions so they understand what was found, why it matters, and what choices are available before authorizing any work.

    • Invite homeowner participation when appropriate.
    • Complete the evaluation before building recommendations.
    • Organize findings and explain them simply.
    • Discuss recommendations before presenting formal options.
    • Present all appropriate options without assumptions.
    • Connect recommendations to customer benefits and priorities.
    • Answer questions honestly and completely.
    • Respect every decision without pressure.
    • Obtain clear approval before beginning work.
  • Step 5: Start the Work

Customers judge our organization, cleanliness, communication, and respect long before they can judge the technical work itself. Their confidence in our workmanship is built by the professionalism they experience while it is being performed.

    • Protect floors, furnishings, and surrounding areas.
    • Maintain a safe and organized worksite.
    • Follow manufacturer requirements, codes, and company standards.
    • Choose quality over shortcuts or unnecessary speed.
    • Keep tools and materials orderly.
    • Communicate changing conditions before proceeding.
    • Respect the home throughout the work.
    • Clean while working, not only at the end.
  • Step 6: Midpoint Conversation

While work is underway, customers naturally wonder what is happening and how long it will take. Midpoint conversations remove uncertainty and keep the customer involved throughout the visit.

    • Provide updates before the customer has to ask.
    • Use multiple midpoint conversations when the job requires them.
    • Explain progress, remaining work, and timeline changes.
    • Communicate new findings clearly.
    • Show the customer relevant conditions whenever practical.
    • Return to Step 4 when the scope or options change.
    • Obtain approval before additional work.

Good communication removes uncertainty. Great communication builds confidence.

  • Step 7: Finish the Work

Completing the repair or installation is only part of finishing the job. The last few minutes before calling the customer back are often the difference between a good experience and an exceptional one.

    • Verify the repair or installation is operating correctly.
    • Confirm all safety checks and operational tests have been completed.
    • Inspect your work before inviting the customer to review it.
    • Remove all tools, materials, packaging, and debris.
    • Restore the work area to a clean, orderly condition.
    • Look for small details that demonstrate pride in your workmanship.
    • Take clear photos of the completed work and surrounding area.
    • Document helpful home and equipment information for future visits.
  • Step 8: Wrap Up

The final conversation is the customer’s last impression of Summers & Zim’s. It’s the opportunity to confirm what was completed, answer remaining questions, and make sure the customer feels confident in their equipment and in their decision.

    • Personally review the completed work with the customer.
    • Explain the work in clear, understandable language.
    • Demonstrate equipment operation whenever appropriate.
    • Review maintenance or operating recommendations.
    • Answer all customer questions before leaving.
    • Schedule or confirm any required follow-up visits before leaving.
    • Thank the customer for their trust and business.

Every Wrap Up should leave the customer with three feelings: I understand what was done. I know what to expect moving forward. I’m glad I chose Summers & Zim’s.

One Team, One Customer Experience

The Academy is designed primarily to support the growth of our technicians — the field professionals who represent Summers & Zim’s in our customers’ homes each day. But our success is never the work of one person.

Every customer experience is supported by a team answering phones, scheduling calls, ordering parts, preparing materials, processing completed jobs, providing technical guidance, coaching performance, and removing obstacles. Our technicians are the face of Summers & Zim’s in the home; the responsibility of the entire team is to prepare and support them so they can serve the homeowner well.

We have different responsibilities, but we are all pulling in the same direction — and we are all committed to giving one another the tools, coaching, and support needed to succeed.

Together, we create the experience our customers remember.

What We're Looking For

No experience required. Just the right stuff:

  • Show up on time, every time
  • Be hungry to learn
  • Take pride in your work
  • Be the kind of teammate people can count on

If that sounds like you, we want to hear from you.

Why Summers & Zim's?

We’ve been in this community for over 96 years. Our technicians aren’t just employees; they’re neighbors, craftspeople, and the reason customers call us back year after year.

When you join our academy program, you’re not starting from the bottom. You’re building from a foundation that’s been solid since 1930.
