Thinking “Heat” Now Can Prepare You for Winter

July 18, 2013

When you’re in the middle of a summer heat wave it’s hard to think about needing more heat. But this is the perfect time to take care of projects that can make your home warmer in winter. Start by fixing drafty windows and doors by replacing worn caulking and making sure windows close tightly. Check your attic and spaces above your second floor for proper insulation. Not only will it keep your home cooler in summer, it will keep it warmer in winter. Now is a good time to better insulate your home. If you have a wood-burning fireplace, summer is when it should be cleared of wood, ashes and built-up soot, be sure the damper opens and closes correctly and is in good repair, and check the chimney screen to be sure birds aren’t nesting there.
