Winterize Your Outside Faucets

October 31, 2013

With shorter days and cooler temperatures, you no longer need to water your lawn and plants. Now is a good time to disconnect your outside hoses to store them in your garage or basement until next spring and prepare your outside faucets for winter. When you disconnect hoses drain all the water out of them before bringing them inside. Then turn off the water supply to the outside faucet at the supply source. After you’ve turned it off go back outside and turn on your faucets to drain all the water that is still in the pipes. When no more water comes out, turn your outside knob securely to the off position. Wrap the outside faucet and any exposed pipe with an insulating material and secure it so it stays in place. This will help prevent your pipes from freezing and bursting during sub-freezing temperatures.
