When you get a price for plumbing, heating, cooling, or electrical work, it’s fair to wonder what’s behind the number. That’s especially true when you can find the part itself online for a fraction of it.
The part is the smallest piece of it. What you’re hiring is the person who knows which part it is, the truck that already has it on board, and the company that will still be here if something goes wrong in a year. Here’s what that takes.
What a Visit Costs
There is a $179 travel fee for Summers & Zim’s technicians to come to your home. Once they’ve arrived, they’ll talk with you about the problem at hand and provide a quote for next steps.
Assuming you decide to move forward with their quote, the travel fee is fully applied toward the total cost.
If for whatever reason you would not decide to move forward with the proposed next steps, the travel fee would be owed to cover their time to come to your home.
What Your Project Price Includes
A trained technician
Years of field experience, technical schooling, and manufacturer training. Knowing which part failed is the easy half. Knowing why it failed is the part that keeps you from calling us again later.
A truck that’s already stocked
Every service vehicle is a working shop. Tools, diagnostic equipment, and the parts we reach for most, so the job gets finished without a trip to the supply house.
A team behind the technician
Dispatch, parts and warranty coordinators, project managers, the people who pull permits and answer the phone. Most of them you’ll never meet.
Professional-grade parts
Chosen for compatibility, code compliance, and manufacturer support, then backed by us. Not every part that fits is a part we’d put in your house.
Licensing, insurance, and safety
Trade licensing, liability and workers’ comp insurance, commercial vehicle coverage, safety training, calibrated test instruments, permits and inspections where they’re required.
Care taken in your home
Floors protected, work areas kept organized, the job tested and the space cleaned before we go.
Warranty and follow-up
Workmanship warranties, manufacturer claims handled for you, and a local number that reaches someone who knows what we did.
The Cost of Being Ready
Not every hour of a service company’s day lands on someone’s invoice.
Technicians drive between calls, restock trucks, sit in training, maintain tools, chase down parts, and get ready for the next house. And a company worth calling in a February cold snap has to carry the capacity to answer in February. That means carrying it in October too.
A Repair Is More Than Swapping a Part
Pulling the failed part and putting in a new one might take fifteen minutes. That’s one step. Here’s the rest of it, and it’s why a fifteen-minute part can turn into a three-hour visit.
Confirm the diagnosis
Before anything comes apart.
Replace the part correctly
Right connections, right settings, right torque.
Inspect what it’s connected to
The failure is often a symptom of something else.
Look for what caused it
A part that failed early usually had help.
Clean and adjust
The things that shorten equipment life are mostly small and mostly ignored.
Test the whole system
Not just the circuit we touched.
Walk you through it
What failed, what we did, and what to watch for.
Why the Price Is More Than the Part
A part on a shelf doesn’t diagnose the problem, drive to your house, lay down drop cloths, install itself, meet code, test the system, or pick up the phone six months later.
The price covers the whole distance between “something’s wrong” and “it’s handled.”
That is the difference between purchasing a part and hiring a professional home-service organization.
We’re Not Always the Lowest Price
Every home-service company decides where to put its money. We put ours into good people, stocked trucks, and being available when you need us.
That means we won’t always be the cheapest quote you get. It also means the work gets done right and someone answers when you call afterward. We think that’s the better deal over the life of the equipment.

How Do I Keep Repair Costs Down?
Nothing lasts forever and not every breakdown can be headed off. But a good share of the repair calls we run were avoidable, and these are the four things that make the difference. Here are 4 ways to avoid the avoidable.
Keep up with maintenance
A maintenance visit is a chance to clean, test, and adjust before the season that puts the equipment under load. It won’t guarantee you never have a breakdown. It does rule out the ones caused by dirt, drift, and wear nobody caught.
Start with a good installation
Good equipment installed badly is unreliable equipment. Proper connections, correct settings, real commissioning and testing. The quality of the install matters at least as much as the name on the box.
Get the system sized right
Bigger isn’t better, and matching whatever was there before isn’t a design. Square footage, insulation, ductwork or piping, electrical capacity, water pressure, venting and drainage, and how you actually live in the house all factor in. Wrong sizing wears equipment out early.
Deal with small things early
A small symptom doesn’t always mean a big repair is coming, but ignoring one narrows your options. Worth a call: new noises, water where it shouldn’t be, breakers that keep tripping, odd smells, rooms that won’t hold temperature, weak airflow or water pressure, equipment running longer than it used to, a utility bill climbing for no reason, or any problem that keeps coming back.
Handling Maintenance and More…
An Blue Collar Club membership includes your preventive maintenance, takes 25% off qualifying repairs, and drops the travel fee. Mostly it means the maintenance actually happens instead of getting away from you.
The Bottom Line
Our prices cover what it takes to do the job properly. Not just the part, and not just the time spent holding the tools.
We know cost matters. So do reliability, safety, and knowing who to call. Before any work starts, we’ll tell you what we recommend, give you the price, answer your questions, and leave the decision to you.
